Art Talk and Family Craft: Discussing the Artwork of LeRoy Foster

The Douglass Branch of the Detroit Public Library is home the Frederick Douglass Mural, a 10 X 12 mural that was unveiled on May 14, 1972. Mr. LeRoy Foster, a native Detroiter, was chosen to execute the mural due to his expertise and talent. We wish to honor the work of this tremendous artist with an overview and talk about some of his works by Lina C. Stephens, Director of Collections and Archives, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Families can also spend time making a "quilt" from textiles (this will be in the other side of the room, separate from the art). This quilt will honor the legacy of Mr. Douglass while showing off the art of our talented youth. The finished item will be on display at the Douglass branch as a pop-up art piece. This is also timed to correspond with the 250th anniversary celebrations across the country.
