Backcountry Navigation: Map & Compass Skills
Overview
Maximum Participants: 12
Learn essential land navigation skills in this hands-on, full-day course. Participants will gain practical experience using topographic maps, compasses, and terrain features to navigate in the field without relying on GPS.
Topics include:
- Understanding topographic maps
- Compass use and taking bearings
- Triangulation and route finding
- Pacing and distance estimation
- Off-trail navigation techniques
Compass Requirements:
Please bring a baseplate compass (no mirror compasses). Adjustable declination is strongly recommended.
Recommended: Suunto M-3 NH
Participants are welcome to bring their own baseplate compass if they already have one.
Acceptable: Basic baseplate compass (e.g., Suunto A-10)
Not Allowed: Mirror/sighting compasses or button compasses
