Bair Island Volunteer Workday

POST protects open space on the San Francisco Peninsula and in the South Bay for the benefit of all. Since 1977, we've worked hard to permanently protect lands for hiking and recreation trails, wildlife habitats, redwood trees and local farms—all of which make our region extraordinary.We want people to get out and enjoy these amazing local landscapes, so we host all kinds of community events—and we'd love for you to join us! See our full list of hikes, film screenings, lectures and more.We're an accredited land trust and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which means we're funded by the generous support of private individuals and foundations.POST-protected properties are all around: Windy Hill, Mindego Hill and several others off of Skyline Boulevard; Tunitas Creek Beach in Half Moon Bay; Bair Island in Redwood City; Whaler's Cove by Pigeon Point in Pescadero; parts of Coyote Valley in San Jose; and many more.

Join Peninsula Open Space Trust and San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory for this fun and unique opportunity to volunteer at the Bair Island Unit of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge.Volunteers will be guided by SFBBO’s staff and POST Volunteers, and you will spend the morning weeding invasive plants, or planting native species that will support Bair Island’s ecosystem.

Tools will be provided, and no prior experience or knowledge is necessary. Volunteering at Bair Island helps maintain and increase the biodiversity in Redwood City. Expect to learn a brief history of Bair Island along with some information about tidal wetlands and native/invasive plants.

This event will involve lifting, digging, carrying, bending, kneeling, and walking on uneven terrain. Keep an eye out for an email containing information about what to bring, wear, etc!Please also note that this activity is best for children ages 14+. All minors must be accompanied by adults for the entirety of the event. As Bair Island is a preserve, there are no dogs allowed. Thank you!
