FRIEND Firefighter STEM Camp – Program Overview

The FRIEND Firefighter STEM Camp, held in partnership with Philomath Fire & Rescue, is a hands-on, two-day educational experience designed to introduce youth to the science, technology, engineering, and teamwork behind modern firefighting and emergency response. The camp combines classroom learning with real-world firefighter training activities to inspire young people to explore careers in public safety while building practical life-saving skills.

Day One of the camp takes place at our community partner Patrick Lumber Company in Philomath, Oregon. Participants receive hands-on instruction in essential emergency response skills including CPR, First Aid, and Stop the Bleed training. This portion of the camp focuses on life-saving medical response, teaching youth how to recognize emergencies, respond quickly, and provide critical care before professional responders arrive. These foundational skills not only build confidence but also empower youth to help protect their families and communities.

Day Two is held at Philomath Middle School, where participants experience what it is like to train as a firefighter. Youth will wear firefighter safety gear and rotate through a series of hands-on training stations led by firefighters and instructors. Activities include operating a fire hydrant, learning firefighter nozzle operations, participating in auto extrication demonstrations using the “Jaws of Life,” practicing wildland firefighting skills, and exploring additional rescue techniques used in real emergency situations.

Throughout the camp, students gain exposure to the STEM principles that support firefighting operations—from water pressure and hydraulics to engineering tools used in rescue scenarios. The program emphasizes teamwork, problem-solving, leadership, and safety while providing a unique opportunity for youth to interact directly with professional firefighters.

The FRIEND Firefighter STEM Camp aims to inspire the next generation of emergency responders while giving youth meaningful skills that can save lives and strengthen community resilience.
