Bettie Course: Introduction to Ice Climbing

Rocky Mountain Conservancy's Education Team directly supports the organization's mission by offering a wide range of educational opportunities, focused on building a love of wild places and inspiring people to act to preserve them. Educational offerings include half-day, full-day, and multi-day adult programs led by expert instructors, as well as scenic ecology bus tours for the whole family, guided hikes, and special programs just for kids and families.

Bettie Courses: Women & Conservation

A collection of courses created by the Rocky Mountain Conservancy to connect women to conservation efforts through educational experiences. Bettie Courses are inspired by the work of Beatrice “Bettie” Willard, a foundational instructor at the Conservancy.

Celebrate Galentine’s Day with adventure and trying something new! Join Rocky Mountain Conservancy and KMAC Guides for an introductory ice climbing course created for women and femme-identifying adventurers. Spend the day learning the fundamentals of ice climbing as you use crampons and tools to move confidently on vertical ice in a supportive and encouraging environment. We’ll climb a frozen waterfall that may not look like much in the summertime, but transforms into a stunning wall of ice in winter.Who: This program is open to women and femme folks ages 16 and up. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.Meeting Location: We will meet at the KMAC Office (1230 Big Thompson Ave, Estes Park, CO 80517) and travel to the trailhead together in Conservancy vehicles.What's Included:<ul><li>Transportation to the trailhead from Estes Park</li><li>Park entry fees</li><li>Ice tools</li><li>Crampons</li><li>Helmet</li><li>Ice climbing boots</li><li>Ropes and other technical gear</li><li>AMGA certified instructor(s)</li></ul>What to Expect: Plan to be outside, hiking and climbing in winter conditions for a full day. There will be a moderate hike in the snow to approach the ice climbing crag. Expect the hike to be up to 4 miles round trip with 500 feet of elevation gain on snowy trails. You don’t need a lot of climbing experience to try ice climbing, but we do recommend you have climbed some before, at least in a gym.What to Bring: You will need a solid cold weather clothing setup that you can climb in. Please note we will be hiking uphill, then spending an extended period of time at the base of the climbs where you will be mostly stationary when not climbing. Bettie Courses are inspired by the life and work of Beatrice “Bettie” Willard, who was a foundational instructor at the Rocky Mountain Conservancy Field Institute. Her research on alpine tundra ecology has been instrumental to mountain ecology, and her advocacy throughout the state of Colorado and across the United States has left a legacy for all who value land stewardship and conservation. Rocky Mountain Conservancy's Bettie Courses focus on accessible programs that introduce women and femme folks to the outdoors through a variety of programs and topics. Courses emphasize science, ecology, and building the outdoor skills and confidence needed to explore and defend wild places.Please note that Bettie Courses are not eligible for member discounts.
