Big Bird and the Summer Scorpion

Big Bird and the Summer Scorpion

Overview

Discover the sky we all share with One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure and The Heart of the Summer Scorpion

Join us at the Blake Planetarium for a delightful summer program designed especially for young children and their families. Through beloved Sesame Street characters and a guided exploration of the night sky, young astronomers will discover that the wonders of space belong to everyone.

Our feature presentation, One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure, follows Big Bird, Elmo, and their friend Hu Hu Zhu from China as they explore the Sun, the Moon, and the stars. Along the way, they learn to recognize constellations such as the Big Dipper and the North Star and even embark on an imaginary rocket trip to the Moon. Filled with fun discoveries, music, and laughter, this engaging planetarium experience introduces young audiences to astronomy while celebrating the idea that people around the world are connected by the same sky above them.

Following the feature, guests will explore the early summer night sky and learn about one of the season's most spectacular constellations: Scorpius, the Scorpion. We'll focus on the bright star that marks the Scorpion's heart and show families how to locate this summer favorite in the evening sky. Participants will also be introduced to a simple partial-sky star map, helping them continue their stargazing adventures at home throughout the summer months.

This program is an excellent introduction to astronomy for young children and first-time planetarium visitors.
