BOBOLINK FIELD TRIP IN WAYLAND
Come see dozens of this now rare and beautiful bird of the Midwest praries that is vanishing in Massachusetts. Bobolink males fly over a managed grassland giving their wonderful songs while females stay on nests incubating or tending babies. Males are white above with large patch of gold on their nape. Many other birds from Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Baltimore Orioles, 3 speciers of vireos and others are easily encountered.
We will meet at the parking lot at the end of Heard Road, the first left off Pelham Island Road. From the lights in Wayland Center go west on Route 20 a few yards and take the angle left on Pelham Island Road about a half mile. There is a boardwalk through a rich forest with singing Wood Thrushes. One reaches a vast tall grass field with a tick free short grass walking edge surrounding the field. It is also used by some dog walkers on leashes.
Join us and see dozens of Bobolinks up here before they return to the Pantanal marshes of SW Brazil for the southern summer.
About Bobolinks:
- Bobolinks migrate nearly 12,500 miles each year between North and South America.
- Their scientific name means “rice eater.”
- Males change from buffy-yellow in winter to striking black-and-white in spring.
- Bobolinks have an unusual love life: both males and females may have multiple mates, and a single nest of chicks can have more than one father.
