Earth to Fire: Foraging Wild Clay & Pit-Fired Pottery [Two-part Workshop]

Earth to Fire: Foraging Wild Clay & Pit-Fired Pottery [Two-part Workshop]

Fox Haven Organic Farm & Learning CenterJefferson, MD
Overview

Forage wild clay, sculpt pottery by hand, and fire it in a traditional pit kiln during this two-part earth-to-fire pottery experience.

Join us for a hands-on exploration of one of the oldest forms of pottery making. In this two-part workshop, we’ll work directly with the land—gathering clay, shaping it by hand, and firing it in an open pit using natural materials. This is a slow, communal process that connects creativity, craft, and the elements.

Part 1 – Foraging Clay & Sculpting
Friday, June 12 | 6:30–9:00 PM
We’ll begin by learning how to identify and harvest clay from the landscape. Participants will process the clay and use simple hand-building techniques to sculpt small vessels or forms. We’ll also talk about the history of pit firing and prepare pieces for the firing.

Part 2 – Pit Firing & Overnight Campout
Friday, July 17 | 6:30 PM – Overnight
Return to the farm to fire your pottery in a traditional pit kiln. Together, we’ll layer pottery with wood, natural materials, and minerals that create unique surface patterns during the firing. The evening becomes a shared fireside gathering as the kiln burns into the night. Participants are invited to camp out and experience the full rhythm of the firing process.

No prior pottery experience is needed. Participants should plan to attend both sessions.
