Exploring Natural Wonders in the Heart of the City
Discover two city treasures and the nature surrounding them in this one-way trek from the Mission to Corona Heights.
Our walk starts at the Mission Science Workshop with a brief talk from the site director and some time to examine the hands-on exhibits. Then we’ll make our way to the Randall Museum in Corona Heights Park, exploring hidden natural treasures along the way.
Walk Leader: Emil Fogarino and special guests
Emil is a former science teacher at George Washington High School and lifetime educator. His focus and interest on marine biology and population studies helps him to understand the Bay Area on an intimate level, which is pivotal in his role with Nature in the City. He's been leading fun & engaging NTC nature walks. He also spends his time volunteering at the Tunnel Tops Field Station and the Presidio Native Plant Nursery.
Details: We’ll spend the first half hour examining the natural history displays at the Mission Science Workshop. In addition, there will be a brief talk from the director, Morgan McDonald. If you want to spend more time exploring, feel free to arrive early - they open at 10am.
Then we’ll walk to Corona Heights Park, which is approximately a mile with a 300 foot elevation gain. As we walk up Beaver street we will stop at a community garden and two historic houses. We will then continue on the way to Corona Heights Park, stopping at the geologically famous slickenside on the northeast slope of Corona Heights at Peixotto Playground.
We’ll be joined by Dominik Mosur, Animal Care Attendant. Dominik is an extraordinary birder and will join us to explore the natural areas of Corona Heights.
The walk will end at the Randall Museum, where you are free to explore further or get a snack or drink at Cafe Josephine (closes at 4pm).
At this point you can make your way back downhill to the Mission. As an option, on the way back some may want to stop at the Saturn Street Steps Mini Park and the beautifully planted Vulcan Stairs.
Preparation: Bring water and snacks and wear sturdy shoes and layers. Much of the terrain is uphill and includes some dirt trails as well as stairways….a walking stick or hiking pole may come in handy.
Meeting Location: Meet at the Mission Science Workshop, 3750 18th St, San Francisco (note the entrance is on Church St between 17th and 18th).
