Fireflies and Cupcakes

WHAT TO EXPECT: Heartwood Nursery and Nature Preserve provides home to many fireflies. This first ever opportunity for the public to see the bioluminescent display at this location. Enjoy a cupcake while learning about the property and these amazing beetles. Then proceed on a leisurely stroll. This experience is a delight in night time observation, all fireflies are to remain free flying. The slow, one mile walk will be on a mix of natural surfaces: bare dirt, gravel, loose rock, grassy areas. Departing from the green house area the walk will pass by a private cemetary; follow along the woodlands to an open meadow; taking the permiter pathway to the serviceberry grove in a figure-eight loop. The pathway is relatively level with minimal elevation change but does include a couple long slopes. This event will incorporate Leave No Trace principles. Upon arrival all participants will be asked to sign a liability waiver.

HOW TO PREPARE: Hiking poles are required for safety since this walk will be after sunset. It is strongly suggested to wear long pants, long sleeves, and sturdy footwear (no sandals or flip flops). Small flashlights and headlamps with red or blue lense can be helpful. If you do not have hiking pole or light device some will be provided. Bring drinking water and any needed personal medication or supplies.

ANIMAL POLICY: Only certified service dogs are permitted. All other pets should remain at home.

REFUND POLICY: If a refund is needed, request must be made 7 days in advance; no later than July 4th.

WEATHER POLICY: This event will be held in light rain. In the event of heavy rain or storms the event will be held on the following evening of July 12th.
