<h3>Welcome to Freedom Nights: The Black Panther Party! Join Project STAND at Eaton House DC for dinner, a film screening, and a post-film talk-back with Dr. Johanna Fernández. All are invited to our last Freedom Nights event of the year.</h3> Tuesday October, 7th: The evening will feature a screening of Takeover (dir. Emma Francis-Snyder, 2021). Our special guest will be Dr. Johanna Fernández, Associate Professor of 20th Century US History at CUNY's Baruch College and the Graduate Center. She is the author of<a href="https://" title="https://" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> The Young Lords: A Radical History</a>, and the winner of both the <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/books/story/2021-08-24/akhtar-ehrenreich-among-winners-of-american-book-awards" title="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/books/story/2021-08-24/akhtar-ehrenreich-among-winners-of-american-book-awards" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">American Book Award</a> and the New York City Book Award. The post-film discussion will be moderated by Kristy L., a cultural worker and community-engaged researcher and educator based in DC. The discussion will explore the Young Lords’ political and cultural impact, women’s roles in the Young Lords, and the continued relevance of these legacies for today's student organizers and ethical approaches to archiving student activism. Location: Eaton House 1203 K Street NW Washington, DC 20005Time: 6:30- 8:45pm Dinner will be served. This program is free and open to the public.The event is co-sponsored by Project STAND, Eaton DC, AADHum, the Mellon Foundation, and the University of Maryland Latina/o Studies Program. Event Series Overview:Freedom Nights is a three-part film and speaker series presented by Project STAND, with support from the Mellon Foundation’s Freedom Dreaming Grant, that explores the radical histories of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Black Panther Party, and the Young Lords. Through documentaries and guest speakers, the series highlights historical examples of student activism in marginalized communities and draws connections to contemporary struggles against political repression and the fight for social justice. Serving as the community launch of the Freedom Dreaming Grant, Freedom Nights underscores the power of collective memory and resistance, aiming to inspire new generations of activists while affirming the importance of archives in sustaining movements for liberation. This series is co-sponsored byProject STAND, Eaton DC, the African American Digital and Experimental Humanities Initiative (AADHum) at the University of Maryland, the Mellon Foundation, and the University of Maryland Latina/o Studies Program.
