Full Day of Turning

Spend a full, creative day at the lathe in this immersive 6‑hour woodturning experience, perfect for beginners and hobbyists who want to build skills and leave with two beautiful, handcrafted projects. You’ll start the day by turning a bowl and finish by creating your own custom wooden pen.

Bowl Turning (Morning Session)

The day begins with bowl turning, where each student will mount a bowl blank on the lathe and learn how to shape the outside—including forming a clean, well‑defined tenon. The blank is then reversed and secured in a chuck so you can hollow and smooth the interior. Finally, the bowl is reversed once more to remove the tenon and complete the form.

Throughout this session, you’ll practice the essential cuts used for shaping and smoothing both the inside and outside of a bowl. Instruction includes the use of traditional bowl gouges, scrapers, and carbide turning tools, giving you the chance to try different tool styles and discover what feels most natural. By the end of the morning, you’ll have the skills and confidence to turn a bowl on your own.

Pen Turning (Afternoon Session)

In the afternoon, you’ll jump into pen turning—a fast, fun project that transforms a simple wood blank into a polished, gift‑worthy writing instrument. You’ll start with a raw wood blank and a pen kit, then learn how to cut, drill, square the ends, turn, sand, and apply a durable finish before assembling the hardware. Along the way, you’ll explore wood choices, tool techniques, and finishing methods that make the process surprisingly enjoyable. By the end of class, you’ll be holding a smooth, functional pen you crafted yourself—and you might even be inspired to start making pens for friends and family.
