PalmerWith the threat of park closings and budget cuts by the city, the People for Palmer Park (PFPP) arose from members of the community who love Palmer Park for the gem it was, is, and can be.PFPP is dedicated to the revitalization of Palmer Park and creating a safe, accessible and equitable place for everyone of all ages to enjoy nature, recreation and healthy opportunities. PFPP is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and the official "Adopt-a-Park" Partner with the CIty of Detroit.PFPP believes that with the collective energy, efforts, and talents of the people who use and love the park, it can be revitalized to its fullest potential and restored to what Senator Palmer envisioned when he donated the land for the park in the late 1800s: “a park for the good of everyone.” Palmer Park is comprised of 296 acres of lawns and historic woodlands, new tennis courts, splash park, hiking and biking trails, Lake Frances, a historic log cabin, a community garden, playgrounds, and more.PFPP is a membership organization and new members and volunteers are necessary and welcome. Core members of the PFPP include residents and representatives from diverse neighborhoods and community organizations.PFPP is committed to the preservation, recreation, and revitalization of Palmer Park, for the good of all. Our vision is to create an urban oasis, regional destination, and daily recreation site that will promote an active and healthy community. Tickets are only sold in advance and you will receive a precise address with your tickets.</p><p>Funds raised will help continue the restoration of Palmer Park's 1880's Historic Log Cabin and also support People for Palmer Park's ongoing efforts to revitalize and beautify this regional destination for all ages. The Cabin was designed in 1885 for Senator Thomas and his wife Lizzie Merrill by legendary architects George D. Just as they are preserving and restoring their historic home, they are supporting the restoration of the Palmer Park Log Cabin, an important landmark and architectural treasure.</p><p><strong><strong>We will also have a Silent Auction</strong></strong> with unique experiences and special opportunities!</p>

<p>The Log Cabin looks magical since the City of Detroit rebuilt the roof, foundation, porch, and exterior. People for Palmer Park (PFPP) raised funds for the restoration of the stained glass windows (Sevonty Restorations) and the wooden Dutch front door, the kitchen, and downstairs Victorian pocket doors (Darren Lasko of Detroit Millwork). PFPP has also raised funds to upgrade the electricity (thanks to the support of the IBEW Detroit electricians' union), and purchased and install period-similar lighting fixtures throughout the cabin and exterior. The downstairs main rooms and hallway have been beautifully painted and a new exhibition system will allow us to display art, photographs and historical artifacts and documents without damaging the walls! A grant from the Michigan Architectural Foundation has allowed us to restore the kitchen and Mrs. Palmer's original Detroit Jewel Stove.</p><p><a href="https://www.peopleforpalmerpark.org/meet-the-palmers.html" title="https://www.peopleforpalmerpark.org/meet-the-palmers.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">But there is still much to do to complete the restoration and this event will take us many steps forward to repair and restore all the woodwork and staircase, finish the second floor, landscape the exterior and more!</a></p>

<h3><strong><strong>How your help will benefit Palmer Park</strong></strong></h3><p>Your support also will help People for Palmer Park, a 501(c)(3) charity, continue organizing recreational programs, beautification activities, and revitalization throughout the Park. In the Log Cabin, the ongoing restoration work will allow us to present more special events, concerts, art exhibits, educational gatherings, storytimes and children's activities, weddings, and celebrations of all kinds.</p><p><strong><strong>Future projects include</strong></strong>: restoring the stairway, floors and other beautiful woodwork throughout the cabin,painting the upstairs walls, landscaping, rebuilding the chimney covers, installing a heating and cooling system, and more. PFPP is working hard to totally restore this legendary home, built and designed by legendary architects <a href="https://historicdetroit.org/architects/george-d-mason" title="https://historicdetroit.org/architects/george-d-mason" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Geoge D. Mason and Zachariah Rice</a> in 1885 for Senator Thomas and Lizzie Merrill Palmer. The Palmers donated the land and the cabin to the City of Detroit as a public park for, as Senator Palmer stated "for the good of everyone."</p><p>You will be sent a detailed map, address, parking directions and more details the week of the event.
