Take a fascinating hike and discover the rich history of James River State Park, from ancient fossils to the American Civil War.
Celebrate National Trails Day with a journey through time at James River State Park. This guided, moderate two-mile out-and-back hike explores the stories, landscapes, and milestones that shaped the park and the surrounding region, from ancient fossils beneath your feet to the strategic role the area played during the American Civil War.
Along the way, we’ll pause at one of the park’s historic cemeteries and learn about the families, communities, and cultural resources connected to this land. The hike concludes with sweeping views from the Tye River Overlook, a perfect reminder of how the park’s natural beauty and human history intertwine.
