Indiana's Native Bees Hike at Mary Gray
Explore Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary while discovering Indiana’s diverse native bees!
Explore the trails of Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary with a focus on one of Indiana’s most important—and often overlooked—pollinators: native bees. With over 400 species in the state, these bees come in many shapes, sizes, and colors, from metallic green sweat bees to fuzzy bumble bees.
Guided by Sam Urquidez, Indiana Audubon's Bird Programs and Partnerships Manager, we'll look closely at wildflowers like coneflower, bee balm, and goldenrod, where bees forage for pollen and nectar. Many native bees are solitary, nesting in the ground or in hollow stems along the trail.
This hike is an invitation to slow down and notice the small but vital connections that sustain Indiana’s ecosystems—one bee, one bloom at a time.
What to Expect
We’ll be hiking on natural trails that may include uneven terrain, mud, or wet conditions depending on the weather. Expect to spend time both walking and stopping frequently to observe and document species. All ages and experience levels are welcome!
