January 2026 King Tides in Alviso

Containing almost 30,000 acres of estuarine habitat, uplands, open water, mudflats, salt ponds, and salt marshes, including much of southern San Francisco Bay, Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge provides habitat for many wildlife.  Its purpose is to protect wildlife habitat for endangered species and migratory birds, and to offer opportunities for nature study. The Visitor Center and Nature Store in Fremont, is open on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refugeis part of the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex and is administered by the US Fish & Wildlife Service. TheSan Francisco Bay Wildlife Societyis a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) Friends group supporting the education, interpretation, and research activities of San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuges.

The January 2026 King Tides event is being held concurrently in two different locations on the Refuge: the Alviso Unit and the Ravenswood Unit(Menlo Park). The same content will be covered. We'll learn what King Tides are, how sea level rise is reshaping our coastal communities, why habitat restoration matters and how you can contribute as a community scientist.We’ll walk along Refuge trails, observe plant adaptations and discuss the impacts of rising oceans. You’ll also learn how to contribute to the <a href="https://www.coastal.ca.gov/kingtides/" title="https://www.coastal.ca.gov/kingtides/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">California Coastal Commission's King Tides Project</a> by uploading photos through the Survey123 app - a statewide effort to record changes to our coast and estuaries. Your photos will be added to a <a href="https://arcg.is/0Gy5Cq" title="https://arcg.is/0Gy5Cq" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">map </a>of this season's King Tides photos.The King Tides also highlight the issue of urban runoff pollution. Trash, toxic chemicals, and other pollutants not normally reached by the tides will be swept into the Bay, affecting humans and wildlife.
