Shmuel Gonzales,theBarrio Boychik, is a community organizer and local historian from Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles. As a Mexican American with roots in early Los Angeles and as a Jewish community leader in today’s eastside, it is his great pleasure to share with you the neglected stories of the diverse faith cultures of our great city.He is the founder of theBoyle Heights History Studios (& Tours)- a community cultural center which is funded entirely by donations in the form of tour ticket sales; enabling us to maintain the heritage of our neighborhood. He also is the founder of theBoyle Heights Chavurah- the grassroots Jewish fellowship of East Los Angeles.Shmuel is also a member of the Board of Directors for theBoyle Heights Historical Society. He is also the in-house community organizer for thePico Union Project, a community center located in the oldest remaining synagogue in Los Angeles. He is also a lay religious leader and the chair of the Jewish Ritual Committee forBeth Shalom of Whittier, serving the communities of Southeast Los Angeles. As well as volunteer my time for a multitude of projects related to the historical preservation of the working-class community of Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles.

Join us for one of our tours about the lovely and storied communities of old Jewish Los Angeles.

SPECIAL COMMEMORATION EVENTThe Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights has long been the crucible of the American immigrant, working-class experience. At one time people of dozens of nationalities and languages called this neighborhood home, and Boyle Heights was once the largest Jewish community west of Chicago.We will visiting just a few vital sites that tell the story of the area’s Jewish history: - <ul><li>The Breed Street Shul – we will start our tour in front of the grand synagogue that was once the most respected Jewish house of worship on the west coast. It was one of more than 30 Jewish houses of worship in the neighborhood. We will also see the location of the first Jewish religious education institutions in Los Angeles.</li><li>Rediscover the former location of the National Theater, the starting point of the Anti-Nazi parade that drew more that 15,000 people of all races to  protest on behalf of Jewish refugees.</li><li>The Old Mount Sinai Clinic – learn about the early history of the two hospitals on the eastside, that would one day become today’s Cedar-Sinai Medical Center.</li><li>The original location of Canter’s Deli, as well as the location of other local Jewish bakeries and delis.</li><li>The location of the Russian Turkish Baths.</li><li>Jewish labor socialist organizing locations: Including the Jewish Labor Committee, Workmen’s Circle, International Ladies Garment Workers Union, as well as local anarchist and communist headquarters.</li><li>We will be ending our tour at Boyle Heights History Studios - our museum and cultural center, and meeting place of the Boyle Heights Chavurah - the grassroots Jewish fellowship of East Los Angeles. Where you can enjoy our historical exhibit &quot;From Brooklyn Ave. to Cesar Chavez: Jewish Histories In Multi-ethnic Boyle Heights,&quot; from the Jacob and Hinda Schonfeld Boyle Heights Collection of the Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies at UCLA.</li></ul>*Note: We will not be going inside of the Breed Street Shul, but instead focusing on the community surrounding this site.We will also be walking old Brooklyn Avenue – today’s Avenida Cesar E. Chavez. Where we will trace the steps of the Anti-Nazi Parade of November 1938 - to talk about the threat of Nazism that was not just present in Europe, but was also being spread by American Nazis from their downtown headquarter; spreading anti-immigrant/anti-refugee hate and plotting white nationalist violence in our very own city.We will then talk about the connection of the historical united anti-fascist and Yiddish labor movements to the empowerment of the Mexican-American civil rights movement, all of which happened in this very neighborhood; and the stream of continuity that connects all this to today’s resistance movement in Boyle Heights.We will be meeting in front of the Breed Street Shul – Congregation Talmud Torah, at 11:45 a.m. in order to start our talk and walking tour promptly at 12-noon.There is limited street parking in the neighborhood. I recommend the city-run toll parking lot (682) just north of Avenida Cesar Chavez off of Breed Street, located on the east side of the street.PUBLIC TRANSIT: I also highly recommend people taking Metro Gold Line to our event, exiting at Soto Station and walking just one block west and one block north to our meeting location. You can connect to the Metro Gold Line from the Metro Red and Purple Lines at Union StationChildren 13 and under are free, please contact me to add them to my guest list. In accordance with city and county policy we do require all attendees to wear a mask covering one’s mouth and nose during the duration of the tour. We are also required to maintain social distancing of 6-feet between families, while we encourage family units we ask to remain together; this will enable us to maximize the ability for everyone to hear the presentation and see the visuals. We are also required to limit the size of this groups to 25% of our capacity and so each tour date will fill-up very quickly; do sign-up right away before we fill-up, as we will not be able to add addition walk-on guests the day of the tour.
