Bohl.<h3>David will share his lived experience as a relinquishee, adoptee, MPE, and person in long-term substance use recovery, or what would be characterized in recovery communities as his Experience, Strength, and Hope (ESH) story.</h3>In 12-step programs specifically like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), the phrase; Experience, Strength, and Hope (ESH) describes the specific way members communicate their lived experience with one another. They talk about what life was like in active addiction, what happened to change the course of their lives, and what life is like as a result on initiating and maintaining recovery.Rather than giving clinical advice or preaching; members share their personal journeys to show others that recovery is possible. It is the language of the heart that breaks down the isolation of addiction. Anddestigmatizes those who suffer from it.BioDavid B. Bohl, MA, Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (WI CSAC), Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (MN LADC), Master Addiction Counselor (MAC), is professional addiction and recovery professional at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and a former consumer of substance use disorder and mental health services. He is also a writer, a speaker, and the author of Parallel Universes: The Story of Rebirth, a memoir that chronicles the intersection of adoption and addiction in his life, and RELINQUISHMENT AND ADDICTION: What Trauma Has to Do With It, a monograph that provides an overview of the complex issues involved in relinquishment and adoption, and in particular, as they relate to susceptibility to addiction. David has co-authored part of a core curriculum for clinical settings focused on educating individuals experiencing co-occurring disorders. He works with individuals experiencing co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health concerns, their families, and those who support them.David lives in southeastern Wisconsin and reaches individuals and families virtually throughout the state. He enjoys spending time with his wife of 41 years, adult children, and grandchild, and relentlessly pursues Blue Mind (that calm mind state that’s found by being in and/or around the water).His dedication to the mission of the collective recovery community comes from the fact that, although persons in the recovery community often lead similar lives to non-recovering persons, they can experience circumstances needing to be overcome and deserve the resources to do so.
