Under Venetian rule, Crete became a cultural crossroads where Greek painters, poets, and intellectuals developed new styles while preserving Orthodox and Byzantine forms. This talk examines icons, literature, and theater produced on the island, highlighting figures such as El Greco and the creators of Erotokritos. We will consider how colonial power, mobility, and cultural exchange shaped this vibrant moment in Greek historyand why Crete played such an outsized role in early modern Mediterranean culture.</p>
