Open Studios: Summer in the City

UrbanGlass fosters experimentation and advances the use and critical understanding of glass as a creative medium. The organization provides access to and an education in glass for professional artists, seniors, students, and members of the public of all backgrounds and familiarity with the material. We offer year-round free and low-cost programming through our 17,000 square foot studios, robust class schedule, fellowship and scholarship opportunities, exhibition center, and in-house printed magazine.Founded in 1977 by a group of dedicated artists, UrbanGlass sought to confront the many barriers limiting creative access to glass such as the high costs of real estate, equipment, and the scarcity of technical expertise. From the organization’s conception it served as it does today: As a creative hub and unparalleled resource center for artists, enabling this material to become available for experimentation beyond the confines of factories and universities in New York City for the first time. Today, glass is seen as an integral component of contemporary art’s complex landscape.

Have you ever noticed all the glass you encounter every day in the city? From mosaics in the subway to windows in skyscrapers, glass makes our city a more vibrant and exciting place. Join us for Open Studios and discover the many ways glass shapes the world around us with an afternoon of art making and exciting demonstrations in UrbanGlass’ 17,000 sq ft studios. Bead Project Market — FREE: Celebrate local artists and shop stunning handmade jewelry created by alumni of The Bead Project scholarship program at UrbanGlass.

Demonstrations — FREE: Watch professional glassblowers sculpt with 2,000°F molten glass, and see how borosilicate glass (the hi-temp glass used in science labs and pyrex bakeware) can be melted and shaped in the flame of a table torch.

Bead Stringing, Glass Magnets &amp; Screen Printing — FREE: String colorful beads into jewelry or bag charms, make glass magnets from drawings or paper cutouts (you can bring your own photos/magazines!), or bring a shirt to screen print with a mystery design. We’ll also have $10 totes available for purchase on the day-of. Drop-in activities, while supplies last (all ages with chaperone).

Glassblowing: Mini Bowls — $85: Learn how to sculpt molten glass and blow a colorful double-walled bowl to hold your treats and trinkets. One-on-one lesson, 30 minutes (ages 12+).Objects made during the lesson must cool slowly overnight, so please plan to return the following week for pickup.

Beadmaking: Summer Charms — $45: Play with fire at the table torch as you melt and shape glass rods into fun beads like ice cream cones, beach balls and other summery icons. Students can anticipate making 1-3 successful beads, along with some failures. One-on-one lesson, 30 minutes (ages 12+). Objects made during the lesson must cool slowly overnight, so please plan to return the following week for pickup.

Fusing: Fruity Coasters — $35: Design your own fruity coasters or hanging wall tiles by layering different forms of room-temperature glass (sheets, strands, crushed granules) that will get melted together in the kiln. Group lesson, 30 minutes (all ages with chaperone).Objects made during the lesson must cool slowly overnight, so please plan to return the following week for pickup.

Neon Experience — $45: Ever wondered how neon signs are made? Get a feel for the process by bending glass tubes over a standing torch and make some simple shapes like squiggles or triangles! Keep your piece as is, or have it transformed into a glowing neon sign for an additional $110 Bombarding fee. Bombarding can be purchased on the day of at the front desk, and includes your choice of gas (Neon = red | Argon = violet | Argon-Mercury = blue), a neon transformer, materials and instructions for installation. One-on-one lesson, 30 minutes (ages 14+). Please allow up to two weeks for processing work that needs to be Bombarded.
