Origins: From the Big Bang to the Summer Sky
Explore the origins of the universe with Cosmology and The Heart of the Summer Scorpion
Join us at the Blake Planetarium for an evening that explores one of humanity's greatest questions: How did the universe begin? Through a fascinating journey across space and time, you'll discover how scientists have developed our modern understanding of the cosmos and learn to find one of summer's most beautiful celestial landmarks.
Our feature presentation, Cosmology, examines the science behind our current understanding of the universe. While humans have gazed at the night sky and wondered about its origins for thousands of years, many of the discoveries that shape modern cosmology are less than a century old. This immersive fulldome program traces the evolution of our ideas about the universe, from early theories about its size and structure to the development of the Big Bang Theory and our current understanding of its past, present, and future.
Written and produced by high school and college students, Cosmology presents the evidence that has transformed our view of the cosmos, revealing how astronomers use observations to investigate the age, origin, and ultimate fate of the universe. Through stunning visuals and engaging storytelling, audiences will gain a deeper appreciation for both the mysteries we have solved and the questions that remain unanswered.
Following the feature, guests will explore the early summer night sky and discover Scorpius, the Scorpion, one of the season's most recognizable constellations. We'll focus on Antares, the brilliant red star known as the "Heart of the Scorpion," and learn how to locate this celestial beacon in the evening sky. Participants will also be introduced to a simple partial-sky star map, making it easy to continue their exploration of the night sky throughout the summer.
This program combines cutting-edge science, human curiosity, and practical stargazing skills in an unforgettable journey through the cosmos.
