3-Hour WorkshopDate: Saturday, October 14, 2023Time: 10am-1pmDescription: In this workshop participants will be presented with a brief history of how Japanese knotweed was transferred to America. Japanese knotweed, a noxious species which continues to propagate and spread, has overwhelmed parklands, vacant lots, brownfield sites, and personal property, including our own backyards and gardens! This knotweed invasion has reduced biodiversity by out-competing native plant species and animals.Participants will learn how knotweed can be useful in making paper pulp to be used in creating handmade paper. Tuition: $55 + $10 materials feeMaterials: All materials are included but students are encouraged to bring pressed flowers or (flat) natural objects that may be included in the pulp in their personal projects. It’s important that these items are flat or pressed. Location: Contemporary Craft (5645 Butler St., Pittsburgh, PA 15201) Cancellations and Refunds: Workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If workshops must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded through Eventbrite, or you may leave your workshop fee in your Contemporary Craft account for future workshops. Refund Policy: Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three-business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks.

About the ArtistMy name is Albert Pantone. I’m a fiber artist who processes the invasive plant Japanese Knotweed into fibers and paper pulp to create art and teach paper making. I harvest this noxious species from vacant lots, brownfield sites, and public spaces where it continues to propagate and spread. This invasion has reduced biodiversity by out-competing native plant species and animals. It also encroaches on parklands, river systems and even our own backyards.What inspires me is how, through the paper making process, I can deconstruct and transform this aggressive plant and tame it into a delicately formed sheet of paper. I am fascinated by the texture, color and unpredictability of the wet pulp which entices me further to add natural plant and other inclusions to bring together the relationship between paper, the remains of the plant and the environment it was harvested from.I sometimes manipulate the pulp even more, pressing it in and around molds to create three-dimensional sculptural works. I often work in the field and at my outdoor studio, Knot Just Weeds LLC, in Braddock PA.
