Overview

Explore Parkinson’s disease and evidence-informed Pilates strategies to support movement, posture, gait, and quality of life.

Workshop Description

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease, affecting more than 10 million people worldwide. In the United States alone, nearly 1 million individuals are living with PD, with approximately 90,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Chances are, you already know—or will know—someone navigating life with Parkinson’s disease.

This workshop explores the physiology, etiology, and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease while introducing the Pilates 4 Parkinson’s (P4P) Method of exercise training. The goal of P4P is to help individuals Preserve Movement Independence. Our programming produces noticeable results in a relatively short time due to its targeted focus on uprighting posture, improving spinal mobility, and preserving ambulation and gait. The program integrates diverse training modalities, all guided by the principles of the Pilates Method. As a primary non-pharmacological approach, the P4P Method provides a safe, effective, and accessible way for individuals of all ages, body types, and stages of PD to stay active and engaged.

Because Parkinson’s is a progressive condition with no current cure, the focus must be on slowing progression and preserving quality of life. Exercise is central to this effort—because while Parkinson’s affects movement, movement has the power to influence Parkinson’s.
