Preschool Lake Hike

Preschool Lake Hike

Mountain Lakes ParkNorth Salem, NY
Overview

A short hike around Hemlock Lake to search for tadpoles and other aquatic life.

So much local wildlife is visible at Hemlock Lake! At the lake beach we will look for tadpoles and frogs, learning how life starts for amphibians. While hiking around the lake we will look for what's blooming and keep an eye out for the birds that make this lake their home. Throughout the program we will gather lake water to search for critters that make the water their home and participants will learn how to do a pond study at their local body of water.

This program is designed for ages 3-5, but all ages are welcome. The hike is rated moderate due to uneven terrain and is about .6 mile round trip. Sturdy, mud-resistant or waterproof shoes are recommended. Please avoid using sunscreen or bug repellant as it harms amphibians. Instead wear hats and long sleeves. Steady rain and other inclement weather will cancel.

Space is limited and advance registration is REQUIRED due to parking restrictions.

Mountain Lakes Park is located at 201 Hawley Rd., North Salem. Entrance to this Westchester County Park is always free, and they have kindly donated use of the shelter at Hemlock Lake South. Parking will be at the Hemlock Lake Mess Hall with overflow at the beach just past it. Drive into the park and take the 2nd left towards Hemlock lake and take the road to the gravel parking lot by the lake. We will also place signs in the park.
