<h4>About this webinar:</h4><p>"Preservation in Action: Saving New Deal Art from DC to NYC" offers a sweeping perspective on the campaign to Save the Wilbur J. Cohen Federal Building through a conversation with Michele Cohen, Founding Director of New York City's Public Art for Public Schools and a longtime New Deal art preservation advocate. Beginning with the history of early New Deal art advocacy in New York City in the 1970s, this conversation will discuss the challenges and impact of preserving America’s public art, starting with recollections of the pioneering work of Marlene Park, a curator, scholar, and preservationist with whom Michele studied and safeguarded more than 20 New Deal–era murals in New York City. Michele will also reflect on a New Deal-inspired organization that she founded called Public Art for Public Schools (PAPS). Active in both commissioning and preserving art in New York City, PAPS carries forward the work of the Works Progress Administration that similarly provided resources for commissioning art for schools and also renovating existing artworks. Join us for a gallop through decades of American art history and the coalitions of scholars, curators, and preservationists who have championed and continue to champion New Deal art today.<br></p>
