Safety pins, studded jackets, rebellious flair — punk fashion was more than just a look; it was an attitude. But how did this underground movement become an iconic cultural statement? From gritty subcultures to Hollywood blockbusters, it’s time to dive into the world of punk fashion and its place on the silver screen.
Join New York Adventure Club as we journey through the history of punk fashion and discover how film captured the raw essence of this rebellious movement, from its underground origins to its influence in mainstream culture.
Led by esteemed costume designer and fashion historian Jolene Marie Richardson, our fashion-forward virtual experience around a style that changed youth culture forever will include:
- A look at punk fashion’s origins, from Vivienne Westwood’s London Underground scene to iconic 1970s rebellion
- An overview of how films like Rock n’ Roll High School, SLC Punk, and Valley Girl captured the spirit of punk
- The role of hair, makeup, and DIY style in defining punk’s unapologetic aesthetic
- The evolution of punk fashion from the 1970s to today, including its influence on contemporary designers and pop culture
- A discussion around the symbols and “lace language” that defined the attitude behind the look
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Jolene — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
