Red Banks Alvar SNA Tour & Native Prairie Seed Collecting
Join for our 6th annual "Learn N' Work" at Red Banks Alvar State Natural Area in Brown County!
This will be NERN’s sixth annual “Learn ‘N Work” volunteer event at Red Banks Alvar State Natural Area in Brown County. Alvar landscapes are present in only a few places along the Niagara Escarpment’s 1,000+ mile long corridor and we’re lucky enough to have one right in Brown County! An alvar’s thin soils and stone pavements host many unique and rare plants. The morning’s goal will be to learn about and collect the seeds from some of the native plants that flourish at this site. Led by DNR Biologist Jacob Koebernik, volunteers will take a walking tour of the alvar and learn how to collect native plant seeds for use as part of DNR restoration efforts. In addition to Jacob’s knowledge of the site’s biology, NERN host Bob Bultman, who is a geologist and ecologist, will provide additional background on the Niagara Escarpment’s formation, unique geologic characteristics, and cultural significance during the tour.
This event is a fundraiser for NERN, and all proceeds go towards the Niagara Escarpment Interpretive Sign Program. Donations are encouraged and accepted at registration. The event will be held (light) rain or shine. This is a relatively easy task but may require some bending depending on the plants selected for harvest. Be sure to bring some sturdy shoes as the alvar landscape can be quite rugged to walk on at times. Wear appropriate clothes / protection for weather and bring gloves and water. No restrooms are available at the site.
Suggested minimum donation of $10.00 per person. Pre-registration is required, and donation can be made at time of registration. Claim your spot and sign up soon! Find more details at www.wiledge.org and register by October 3rd.
