Revive The Roots Volunteer Days 2026

Revive The Roots Volunteer Days 2026

Overview

Every First Sunday, Revive the Roots hosts a volunteer day and community meal to celebrate and steward the land and its people.

Join us on the first Sunday of the month, February through November, to help care for the lands of Mowry Commons! The day starts with a 12 PM check-in where the Volunteer Coordinator helps match all skill and ability levels with light to heavy levels of physical, mental and creative tasks. Members of our Land Stewardship Committee guide projects and help give insight into our practices on the land. Tasks vary depending on the weather, time of the year and what needs to be done. During our volunteer days you could be helping out with annual production (planting/weeding), trail maintenance, habitat restoration (getting rid of invasive species and planting beneficial ones), organizing, tool repair and maintenance, painting, trash pick-ups, building infrastructure and repair projects. All ages are welcome! The work ends around 3 PM when we gather for a shared meal. We make sure that there are always vegan and gluten free options. If you have other dietary restrictions please contact the volunteer coordinator, Amanda, at volunteer@revivetheroots.org.

Look for an email from volunteer@revivetheroots.org a few days prior to the scheduled volunteer day. This email will have important information about the projects for the day. Always feel free to reach out for information regarding accessibility and specific volunteer tasks.

Please know before showing up, there is no tolerance or space for homophobia, racism, transphobia, ableism, and any other forms of oppression. We welcome folks who are committed to creating a community where all can flourish.

Our volunteer day has become quite popular, we are so happy that you want to come help in caring for this land with us! Please sign up if you are committed to coming for the majority of the event. If your schedule changes and you can no longer attend, release your ticket so that folks on the waitlist can attend.

Note for groups, organizations, companies and schools: If you want to volunteer for Revive the Roots with a group please contact Amanda at volunteer@revivetheroots.org.

Important Information:

Where to meet us:

Come to 374 Farnum Pike, Smithfield RI and meet us near the Community Gardens, greenhouse and pavilion. You’ll be sure to see us! If you come late and don’t see anyone, call 401-305-0539.

What to bring and how to prepare:

  • Come ready to work, socialize and learn!
  • We require all folks working on the land to sign our Volunteer Agreement. Paper waivers are available onsite or you can fill out the Volunteer Agreement here: https://www.revivetheroots.org/volunteer-agreement.html
  • Wear good shoes. Hard soled hiking or work boots preferred. Sneakers are okay. Sandals and open toed shoes are not recommended. Be prepared to get a little dirty!
  • Bring a water bottle. We can refill or supply a water bottle as needed.
  • Wear what makes you comfortable! Dress for the weather, sunhats, long sleeves and pants are good for trail maintenance work. There are thorns, poison ivy and ticks on the property.
  • We supply sunscreen, bug repellant and work gloves but every now and then we run out or don’t have the right size gloves. Bringing your own personal protective gear is always appreciated.
  • The volunteer coordinator may ask if you have your own pruners or specialized tools to bring them to use during the day. Please keep track of what you bring. This is appreciated but not required.
  • A port-a-potty is available near the community gardens. A sink is located in the community garden. Our bathrooms are not wheelchair accessible. It is a goal to improve accessibility. Please reach out if you have any questions or suggestions about how we can make our volunteer days more accessible.

Food:

We love being able to share food at the end of the day. It is how we show our appreciation and enjoy the fruits of our labor by eating what the land provides. Meals are served in a buffet/family style. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options are alway provided. If you have allergies or dietary restrictions please let us know (by emailing volunteer@revivetheroots.org) and we will do our best to accommodate.

We do our best to have a few snacks, tea and/or coffee available throughout the day.
