Summer Book Club
We've got two amazing selections for July and August, so join us at the library!
Our july selection is There Goes the Neighborhood by Jade Adia.
Winner of the 2024 Coretta Scott King John Steptoe New Talent Award
A raised fist against the destructive forces of gentrification and a love letter to communities of color everywhere, Jade Adia’s unforgettable debut tells the darkly hilarious story of three best friends willing to do whatever it takes to stay together.
The gang is fake, but the fear is real.
Rhea’s neighborhood is fading away—the mom-and-pop shops of her childhood forced out to make space for an artisanal kombucha brewery here, a hot yoga studio there. And everywhere, the feeling that this place is no longer meant for her. Because while their little corner of South L.A. isn’t perfect, to Rhea and her two best friends, it’s something even more important—it’s home. And it’s worth protecting.
And for August we have Love & Justice A Story of Triumph on Two Different Courts by Maya Moore Irons and Jonathan Irons
This is a memoir by WNBA star Maya Moore Irons and her husband, Jonathan Irons, detailing their love story and fight for justice after Irons was wrongfully convicted as a teenager. The book, published in 2023, chronicles how Moore left her basketball career to help secure Irons' release from prison, a journey that led to their marriage and highlights themes of faith, perseverance, and criminal justice reform.
If you've never been to out book club now is a great time to see what we're about. Fun, casual, relaxed. Sometimes we even talk about the book (kidding).
