The Beginning -- In the first class, we focus on the first 30 seconds of an improv scene. We'll look at the things we need to do in that opening, but also how we have to be: what is the mindset of an improviser that helps a scene have a solid start with good momentum? How can we be simultaneously positive, energized, specific, intentional and present?
The Middle -- In the second class, we tackle the meat of the scene: what happens after the basic situation has been set. We'll look at settling into the character, relationships and setting and finding the emotional reality that gives the scene life. Our focus will be on discovering what the scene is about (as opposed to making the scene about something).
The End -- In the third class, we focus on the skills and attitude that produce satisfying endings. To end a scene requires that we either make an offer that is the last one or treat the last offer made as the end. Often the most satisfying endings are the ones that surprise us, but we all too often miss really good endings because we are caught up in something else. This class will help to sharpen our skills of noticing when a scene is done and fully committing to the conclusion.
We have community standards, a conflict process, and a COVID prevention policy in place. Agreement/acceptance of these policies is required to participate in BATS classes.
