Overview

An Afternoon with Earle Shettleworth

Between 1925 and 1940, Maine artist Mildred G. Burrage created forty maps, many of which portrayed historical subjects, including the American Revolution. This lecture explores a fascinating but largely unknown body of work by a major twentieth century Maine artist who was inspired by her love of history.

This lecture is co-hosted with the Maine Historical Society, and is part of the Osher Map Library's Founding Memories: America at 250 Lecture series, with grant support from the Maine Semiquincentennial Commission with funding provided by the Maine State Archives and Maine State Cultural Affairs Council.

Lecturer: Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., has served as Maine State Historian since 2004. At the age of thirteen, Shettleworth became interested in historic preservation through the destruction of Portland’s Union Station in 1961. A year later he joined the Sills Committee which founded Greater Portland Landmarks in 1964. In 1971 he was appointed by Governor Curtis to serve on the first board of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, for which he became architectural historian in 1973 and director in 1976. He retired as director of the Commission in 2015. Earle has authored and co-authored dozens of books and articles on Maine History, and in 2023, the Maine Historical Society awarded Earle their prestigious Maine History Maker Award, in honor of his deep impact on Maine's History and built environment over the last six decades.
