From royal courts and sacred paintings to modern masterpieces, the violin has inspired artists for centuries. How did an instrument perfected in Renaissance Italy become one of the most recognizable symbols in both music and visual culture? It's time to uncover the fascinating story of the violin through art, craftsmanship, and history.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the remarkable history of the violin, from its medieval origins and refinement in Renaissance Italy to its enduring influence on art, culture, and musical performance across the centuries.
Led by lecturer Simon Rees, our unique experience will include:
- A discussion of the violin and fiddle, exploring whether there is truly a difference between the two instruments and how their identities have evolved over time
- An overview of the violin's medieval origins and its earliest appearances in paintings and other visual works
- A closer look at the legendary Cremona workshops, where the Amati, Stradivari, and Guarneri families perfected violin design and craftsmanship
- An exploration of the violin as an artistic subject, from still lifes and portraits to sculptures imbued with symbolic meaning
- A survey of iconic violin imagery in modern art, including Marc Chagall's Green Violinist and its influence on popular culture
- Stories of celebrated musicians and historic instruments, featuring Niccolò Paganini and some of the world's most treasured violins
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Simon — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!

About Simon
Simon Rees spent 23 years as Dramaturg for Welsh National Opera in Cardiff, doing research for designers and producers and tracking down unusual items – for instance, black lace mantillas and matadors’ hats for Bizet’s Carmen. His office was under the props department, and later next to wigs and makeup, so he was able to see all the magical illusions of opera being created in front of his very eyes.
