This Watershed Investigations course is a partnership with Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter. Class times are approximately 8 AM - 4 PM starting Thursday, July 11th and ending Saturday, July 13th. Class will be based at the Swaner Preserve with day trips to the Upper Provo River in the Uinta Mountains and down to the Great Salt Lake.You will be given access to the Watershed Investigations online course 6 weeks before the start of the field course - completion of this course is required before attending the field course.This is an adult education program that is open to participants 18 years of age or older. Exceptions for teens as young as 15 may be made if a parent/guardian is also registered for the course. Please email utahmasternaturalist@usu.edu if you want to register a child as young as 15.Course Description:From high alpine lakes and streams to the Great Salt Lake and unique temporary wetlands of the arid desert, Utah has a vast diversity of aquatic systems that interact with each other throughout and across watersheds. In each Watershed Investigations course, you will experience and learn about how these various waterways interact within a local watershed.Utah's aquatic and wetland ecosystems are inhabited by plant and animal communities that are well-adapted to wet, ephemeral, or saline environments. You will discover how to evaluate watershed ecosystem health through water chemistry and aquatic insects!Each Utah Master Naturalist course consists of 40 hours of instruction, with approximately 16 hours covered in the online course, and the remaining 24 hours spent outdoors in a field course. Field course activities will include instructor-led discussions, guest presentations, small group activities, and open discussions. Class size is small to maximize your opportunities for learning and having fun!Due to the nature of the Watershed Investigations class, we will be walking and hiking over some uneven terrain and often in rocky, wet environments. While we do our best to accommodate people of all abilities, please contact utahmasternaturalist@usu.edu if you have any concerns.Course Materials:All course materials are available for <a href="https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2773&amp;context=extension_curall" title="https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2773&amp;context=extension_curall" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">download here</a>. It is highly recommended that you read them before the start of the course. Physical copies of the manual are distributed on the first day of the field course. If you would like to have a physical copy of the manual shipped to you before the course, there will be a $5 shipping fee. Please respond YES to the question at check out and let us know you will pay $5 for shipping. You can also request to pick up a physical copy of the manual at the Swaner EcoCenter in Park City - to do this send an email to utahmasternaturalist@usu.edu.Course Fees:The $250 registration fee covers the cost of both the online course and the field course. If you have previously completed the online portion of this course, email utahmasternaturalist@usu.edu before you register to receive a discount code.USU credit is no longer available for Utah Master Naturalist courses. There is an opportunity to earn 4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from Utah State University for an additional recording fee of $120. If you would like to receive this credit, please indicate so on the order form at checkout.Cancellation &amp; Refunds:If you cancel at least two weeks before the start of the course, you will be refunded your course registration, less a $30 administrative fee. Canceling less than two weeks before the course results in a refund of 50% of the registration fee (less processing fees). We are unable to issue any refund if a registered participant is a no-show at the start of the course. Cancellation &amp; refund requests can be sent to utahmasternaturalist@usu.edu.
