Join TNC and DCR Natural Heritage to learn about native orchids in Virginia. Zach Bradford, Regional Supervisor and Chesapeake Bay Region Steward for DCR Natural Heritage has traveled around the Commonwealth documenting and studying Virginia native orchids.Virginia is home to over 60 native orchid species ranging from well-known plants like Pink Lady’s Slipper to rare and threatened species like the Purple Fringeless Orchid. Orchids thrive in diverse habitats including forests, wetlands and bogs and many reply on specific habitat conditions. Some of Virginia’s orchids are showy with bright colors and unique flowers and some are small and inconspicuous that many people overlook.Take your new knowledge of Virginia orchids outside and observe wildlife Friday, April 24—Monday, April 27. How many orchids will you discover? This is part of the City Nature Challenge (rural areas, too), a global event to find and document local plants and wildlife.
