Volunteer with us! Black Swallowwort Removal at Victory Park

Difficulty: Easy/Moderate, with some rocky terrain; Beginners are welcome!

What will you do?

Join Friends of the Fells and Dan Bender of Wilderscaping to manage invasive plant species that threaten the valuable Fells ecosystem. We will use hand-pulling and manual tools to remove the aggressive plant species Black swallowwort at this site that abuts the Fells. The presence of Black swallowwort in this location threatens to spread further into the forest and eventually, the Fells itself. We'll also address other invasives as we encounter them like Multiflora rose, Asiatic bittersweet, and more.

Suitable for ages 12 and up.

This event will be held at Victory Park in Medford (Google Maps location here). Parking is available along Winthrop Street or at the Medford High School (Google Maps location here). We'll hike about 2-4 minutes to our site.

Tools, eye protection, and light work gloves will be provided; feel free to bring personal tools, gloves, or eye protection if you prefer those. Please bring a hat, sunglasses, your own full reusable water bottle, and a lunch!

We recommend wearing sturdy shoes, long sleeves, long socks, and long pants to help reduce poison ivy or tick exposure. We will be working outdoors, so please bring or wear sunscreen and/or insect repellent.

Please note that there are no restrooms at this site.
