Water Week: Down to the River- Routes to Freedom Around the Susquehanna
Join us to learn about the connections between our waterways and the Underground Railroad!
Hear how many freedom seekers from the Mid-Atlantic South made their way north along the Susquehanna into Pennsylvania, enduring some of the most rugged and dangerous crossings of our region's Underground Railroad history, made especially so after the passage of the 1852 Fugitive Slave Act. Learn how to read the land for clues about where freedom seekers and the Underground Railroad network moved through the Susquehanna Riverlands and where today you can retrace their emancipation journeys on your own. Get a preview of upcoming Underground Railroad pilgrimage hikes you can join!
