This is more than a course—it’s the knowledge that can save a life.

A nationally recognized Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course designed for individuals who recreate, work, or lead in outdoor environments where medical help may be hours—or even days—away.

Join Loco por la Aventura in collaboration with Base Medical for a comprehensive, hands-on training that will prepare you to respond confidently to real emergencies in the backcountry.

This hybrid course combines online learning with in-person, scenario-based training to give you practical, life-saving skills.


🧭 Course Format

This is a 16-hour hybrid certification course:

💻 8 hours online coursework (completed before in-person session)

🏕️ 8 hours in-person practical training

🧠 What You’ll Learn

The Wilderness First Aid curriculum focuses on essential skills for managing emergencies in remote environments.


🩺 Patient Assessment

  • Scene size-up and safety evaluation
  • Identifying life-threatening conditions
  • Head-to-toe physical exam
  • Vital signs and patient monitoring
  • Patient history (SAMPLE method)

🦴 Spine & Trauma Management

  • Recognizing potential spinal injuries
  • Safe patient handling and stabilization
  • Bleeding control techniques
  • Wound care and management
  • Improvised splinting

🌡️ Environmental Emergencies

  • Hypothermia and cold-related illnesses
  • Hyperthermia and heat-related illness
  • Altitude sickness and prevention

❤️ Medical Emergencies

  • Anaphylaxis
  • Seizures
  • Chest pain
  • Altered mental status
  • Diabetic emergencies (hypoglycemia / hyperglycemia)
  • Hyponatremia

🚁 Evacuation & Decision-Making

  • When to evacuate immediately vs monitor
  • Patient packaging and movement
  • Risk assessment in remote settings

🔄 Scenario-Based Training

All skills are practiced through realistic drills and scenarios that simulate backcountry emergencies.

Participants will actively apply knowledge in hands-on situations guided by instructors.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive:
