What about lodging?

Lodging is not included in this event. You will need to make your own arrangements for the duration of the event. Moab offers a variety of lodging options, ranging from luxurious hotels to RV and tent camping. Choose whatever suits you best.

Question 2

What about food?

Accepted Answer

Food is not included in the program. Some meals will be on your own (though group dining is encouraged). Other meals will be "sack lunch" style, as we visit locations out of town. Plan to bring snacks and beverages to enjoy while we learn.

What about transportation?

Accepted Answer

This event meets in Moab, UT. Transportation to the event is not included or provided, though we do encourage carpooling. We will help facilitate carpooling among participants after registration.

How strenuous is this event?

Accepted Answer

The difficulty rating of this event is "easy." We will be indoors and outdoors. Light to moderate walking on paved and unpaved surfaces with low elevation change. If you have specific questions about accessibility or want to request an accommodation, please reach out.

What books are we reading?

Our keystone book is "The Shortest History of the Dinosaurs," by Riley Black.  We will also read excerpts from Terry Tempest Williams' "The Hour of Land" and Mine Okubo's graphic novel, "Citizen 13660."

Question 6

What is the featured location?

Accepted Answer

We will visit Utahraptor State Park, which preserves a dinosaur fossil bed and a chapter of more recent history, the Moab Citizen Isolation Center, a short-lived WWII-era Japanese internment camp. Additionally, we will visit the Moab Museum to learn more about these topics.

Are the books provided?

Accepted Answer

No. By supplying your own books, you can decide which format (print/audiobook/PDF/library) is best for you. We encourage you to explore buying used copies where appropriate.

Question 8

Are entrance fees covered?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The program will cover all entrance fees associated with our field sites. If you already have a valid Utah State Parks pass, please bring it. You do not need to buy a pass to participate in this event.
