Join The Nature Conservancy to support VA Dept. of Conservation and Recreation native river cane restoration project on the Powell River.

SIGN UP IS FOR WORK DAY 2: POWELL RIVERJoin The Nature Conservancy and the VA Dept. of Conservation and Recreation's Natural Heritage program to harvest native river cane rhizomes. This event supports VA DCR's native river cane restoration efforts to propogate native river cane along the Powell River.Native river canebrakes currently occupy less than ~2% of their native range due to land use changes like fire suppression, grazing, and heavy manipulation of riverbanks. This unique habitat provides shelter for migratory songbirds, stabilizes streambanks, and is a host plant for rare insects like cane feeding moths. It also appears to control many invasive species that are easily transported by river systems.Volunteers will work along side of TNC and VA DCR Natural Heritage staff to dig river cane rhizomes and prepare them propagation. Area partners will care for the new shoots until they are ready for re-planting in late spring/early summer 2026.
