Madera Canyon Nature Trail – Whitehouse Picnic Area to Mt Wrightson Picnic Area

Overview

Join us for a creekside 5.5 mile hike in Madera Canyon.

DESCRIPTION: Join in for an all abilities hike in Madera Canyon. We will start from/meet in the Whitehouse parking lot up Madera Canyon. This hike starts out along the creek in the shade. We will pass overlooks, picnic areas, remnants of past buildings. After reaching the ampitheatre we will climb up higher to gain great views before reaching the Mount Wrightson picnic area. This is will be our turnaround point and a great place for a break before descending back down to the parking lot. For the true birders, you may want to drive up to the Santa Rita Lodge bird feeders after the hike and see what birds are passing through. In the past 2-3 weeks I have heard Coppery-tailed trogons here but have not been able to photograph one. These are spectacularly colorful birds that sound like barking seals patrolling the canyon.

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: Moderate. This is an all abilities hike and we will move at the pace of the group keeping in mind heat.

MEETING SPOT: We will meet at 7am in the Whitehouse parking up Madera Canyon. Please arrive early enough to be ready to go at 7am. The heat has arrived and while the hike is mostly lightly shaded, it will get warm as we climb up the ridge.

There are bathrooms at the trailhead and additional bathrooms at picnic areas along the route.

PARKING PASS / PERMIT: An Interagency Pass / America the Beautiful Pass is required or a day pass can be purchased at the kiosk in the parking lot.

WHAT TO BRING: At a minimum, 2L of water and electrolytes along with your 10 essentials. This hike is rocky in places – please keep that in mind for your footwear.

CANCELLATION POLICY: If you are registering for one of our group events, we ask that you are 100% committed to attending when you register. If you reserve a spot and are unable to attend, please cancel as soon as possible on Eventbrite. We ask that you try to cancel a minimum of 3 days prior to the day of the event as this allows other women who would like to attend the ability to plan to join us.
